Avoid 

• The thermometer doesn't read zero degrees at room temperature, so even if the minimum scale is zero degrees, the needle won't point to zero degrees. 
• Place the thermometer at the bottom or in the middle of the baking sheet without any food while testing. 
• Avoid hanging it on the heat pipe, as the heat pipe temperature may be higher than the temperature in the oven, not necessarily reflecting the correct temperature in the oven.
• Different ovens may have different temperatures at various angles. 
• For an empty oven, set the dial to 30 minutes and observe the prevailing temperature after 15 minutes. 
• The temperature of an empty oven differs from that of a filled oven.
